Extra Credit Opportunity: Book Project #2
Did you read a book this year that you fell in love
with? Are you willing to share with your peers?[CM1]
Directions:
1. The
assignment must be typed
and emailed directly to me[CM2] . Printing
and turning in is optional.
2. Turn in a picture
of you and the book! The book can cover your face, you can hold the book in one
hand and the other hand shows a 1-5 star rating, hold an item that goes along
with the book... get creative! The photo can be sent via email, taken by me, or
brought in on a hard copy for me to scan into the computer.
3. The title
of the whole project should include the title of the book and author.
4. Write a synopsis[CM3] of the
book including all the major points of the plot line. This should be a minimum
of 150
words[CM4] .
5. Write why
you enjoyed the book, your favorite part, and why you would recommend it to a
peer. Think of this as a review that you would find online or on the back of a book[CM5] . You can
include others’ reviews as well as yours.
6. Add
anything additional that you think would add to your overall assignment.
Examples would include the following:
a. Links to
movies, music videos, shows, or remakes
b. List of
additional books by that author (shown in the example)
c. Books that
are similar to this one (shown in the example)
d. Songs that
remind you of parts of the book (much like the Crash playlist we made in class)
e.
Links to the author’s homepage, blog, etc. (much like
what we did with Jerry Spinelli)
This assignment will be done outside of
the classroom[CM6] . If you
are done with work in class or during Titan Time, you may work on it. This
assignment requires a computer and internet access with some research.
The assignment must be completed as
a whole to be graded, and any missing pieces mean the assignment will not be
accepted.
The final extra credit is due December 19th [CM7] and will be
the final “bump” for the end of semester one. Please reference the attached
page as an example of multiple books. There are comments out to the side to
help guide you in the process.
You may not use Crash by Jerry Spinelli, any summer
reading books, or the example books, Thirteen
Reasons Why and Crossover, as
your book. The
book must be on a seventh grade or higher grade level, NO Diary of a Wimpy Kid,
Captain Underpants, etc.[CM8]

Crossover
By Kwame Alexander
Identical twins, Jordan and Josh, are the children of world famous
basketball star, Chuck Bell, and high school assistant principal, Dr. Bell.
Jordan, nicknamed Filthy McNasty, and Josh, nicknamed JB, may be identical in
looks, but not in personality. Before Jordan loses his dreads to an accidental
extra cut from a bet, that seemed to be the only way to tell the two apart by
appearance. [CM13]
As the year
progresses, a new girl comes to school, Alexes, and meets the twins in the
lunch room. JB falls for her and almost immediately. The two of them begin to
date, and the tension between the twins rise. Josh can’t understand JB’s
fascination with Alexes, Ms. Sweet Tea, and begins to get angry as JB’s
concentration on basketball seems to dwindle.
The twins have a falling
out, Josh throws a game ball too hard, and JB ends up with a bloody nose while
the boys end up a feud. [CM14] Mom suspends Josh
from any future basketball games, even if it means the championship. Throughout
the book, we are informed that mom is a bit of a health addict, but we aren’t
quite sure why. At first, you presume the healthy meals and lack of eating out
is because of the boys and their athletics. We later find out that hypertension
runs in the family, on dad’s side. Chuck’s father died at 39 years old from a
heart attack, the twins never knew him.[CM15]
Chuck goes from bloody noses, to vomiting, to eventually falling during
a one on one game between Josh, ending with a trip to the hospital and Chuck in
a coma. After twenty plus days in the hospital, Christmas passes, and Chuck
tells Josh he can play in the championship game. The day of the game, mom runs
upstairs, alerts the boys that Chuck is relapsing again, and bolts to the
hospital. Jordan follows on his bike while Josh loads up with his teammate and
his dad. [CM16]
While playing, Josh is all about the game, barely noticing the text
messages from his mom. When Jordan walks in with tears in his eyes, Josh knew
the inevitable happened. His 45 year old father died of a heart attack while
Josh was playing basketball. [CM17]
The book ends on a lighter note with the twins rekindling their
friendship, Alexes apologizing to Josh about not being at the funeral and her
behavior, and Josh shooting almost fifty free throws in a row, the same number
his dad shot in the Olympic finals.[CM18] [CM19]
Book Trailer
Thirteen Reasons Why
Not only does Jay Asher have a website for his book
collection, he has a website specifically for Thirteen Reasons Why. After
submitting your birthday, you are able to access the tapes by Hannah Baker on
his website
( http://www.thirteenreasonswhy.com/hannahsreasons.html )[CM20] dedicated to the book itself. Unfortunately, since the book has become
an infamous Netflix original series, most of the trailers are focused on the
book coming to life as opposed to the book itself. After signing on for a
second season, the trailers are even harder to find. One trailer I did find,
student made, strikes my interest because of the music and eerie feeling to it,
much like the feeling I had during reading.
Crossover
Death,
Coming of Age, Responsibility, Love, and Family.
Roll
of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred Taylor and Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff.
Similar Themed Books: Thirteen Reasons Why
The
Fault in Our Stars by John Green and If I Stay by Gayle Forman.
Other Books by Jay Asher:
Piper, a graphic novel co-written with Jessica Freeborn[CM24] , What Light, The Future of Us, Scoring With Logic Pro and Going Pro
With Logic Pro Eight (how-to books), Love and Progress, Brighton Beach Murder,
and Sunny Boy.
Other Books by Kwame
Alexander:
Kwame has written fifteen other books, but Crossover
is the only audio book available now. He also has a mixtape available for purchase
that he created with Randy. The mixtape consist of songs that help inspired his
books.

[CM1]-This
book can be read from any point in time from your life, but the goal is to have
a new book read from our school library or my personal books. I would like you
to find a grade-level or higher book to connect with.
[CM2]-Typed
in Word, PowerPoint, or some other form of electronic program. If you are
unsure if it is okay to use a program, ask me in person, phone or email.
-My email is Molly.Childs@fortbendisd.com and
my school number is (281) 327-2413.
[CM3]-This
is just another word for a summary.
-Think of the plot line. If it is easier for you to
write a summary using a plot line, do so! You can turn the plot line in
separately or you can take a picture and add it in or type it into your
project.
[CM4]-This
little chunk below is 150 words:
Miss Childs says one-hundred fifty words. Miss Childs says
one-hundred fifty words. Miss Childs says one-hundred fifty words. Miss Childs
says one-hundred fifty words. Miss Childs says one-hundred fifty words. Miss

Childs says one-hundred fifty words. Miss Childs says one-hundred fifty words. Miss
Childs says one-hundred fifty words. Miss Childs says one-hundred fifty words.
-As you can see, it’s not that many! 150 words would be
the bare minimum!
[CM5]-Don’t
forget you can use Destiny, the library program for finding books, to find
reviews from other students and to write your own.
-You can also find reviews online from big companies,
other libraries, and important people.
[CM6]-Ask
for morning or lunch passes if you need a computer or additional help.
[CM7]-If
you turn it in ahead of time with errors, I will guide you in correcting them,
allowing you to resubmit for full credit.
-The last day to turn it in is December 19th
and no corrections will be allowed if submitted on that day.
[CM8]-If
you are unsure if the book is appropriate for the project, please ask me in
person, phone, or email.
-My email is Molly.Childs@fortbendisd.com and
my school number is (281) 327-2413.
[CM9]-Titles
are always italicized. Almost 1005% of the time, each letter of a new word is
capitalized.
-Be sure to reference the book’s cover if you have any
issues.
-Both of these should be spelled correctly because they
are right in front of you.
[CM10]-You
could make this into a hyperlink or copy and paste the link in (parenthesis) to
allow others to go to the page.
-Here, the link is embedded into the project.
[CM11]-I
did not know this information, so I had to do some research online. I googled
the book title and author together with the word “awards”.
-Good websites to look at for a list of awards is: www.ala.org (search at the top), www.GoodReads.com, and www.BarnesandNoble.com
-Feel free to copy and paste the websites from here
into the search bar of your internet browser.
[CM12]-Always
skip a line and underline or bold a new section header. This separation allows
for ease of viewing and shows you what you’ve done so far.
- [CM13]Exposition
[CM14]-Separate
parts of the story into different paragraphs. There is no limit to paragraphs.
-This is different from a regular paper. You do NOT
need an introduction and conclusion for this synopsis.
- [CM15]Rising
Action
- [CM16]Rising
Action
[CM18]-This
synopsis had 478 words! Once you get going, it is hard to stop sometimes. Don’t
feel like you need to write down every single detail that occurred.
[CM19]-Resolution
[CM20]-Again,
you could link websites or copy and paste the link, as shown.
-Mr. Sinclair, the librarian, and I can teach you how
to embed a link if you ask!
[CM21]-It
is okay to do some research online to jog your memory for themes. Try to do
what you can on your own though!
-Here, I did individual words, but, keep in mind,
themes are a short phrase.
-Try this website for examples: https://literarydevices.net/a-huge-list-of-common-themes/
[CM22]-Two
examples are shown for similar themed books and other books by the author to
show the vast difference.
[CM23]-It
is okay to do some research online to get some ideas. Think about all of the
books you have read in the past, whether it be in school or on your own.
-Good Websites to Use:
Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or even your
library database, Destiny.
[CM24]-If
there are additional authors or illustrators, be sure to put their names down
too.
[CM25]-Reference
bullet point number six in the directions for examples of what you can add.
-Don’t forget, get creative!
-You can add in colors, pictures, artwork, and anything
that adds to the project.
