Student Rec: Wings of Fire

Wings of Fire: The Last Continent

Written by: Tui T. Sutherland

This book, Wings of Fire, is more than just mystical dragons and fire.  It’s a book about heroism, bravery, and wit. The characters are relatable and fun and remind me of myself.  This is the 11th book out of 15 in the series so far.

Blue and Luna, a brother and sister duo of SilkWing Dragons living in captivity in the Cicada Hive.  It almost time for Luna to Metaphorize! A process that gives a Dragon their wings. Life in the Hive is tough, they remain hopeful and respectful.  Swordtail, another SilkWing Dragon, doesn’t like the HiveWing Guards so he stays on the “misbehaviors list”.

Before the day of Luna’s Metamorphosis, her hands start to glow!  She begins to wonder if she is a Flame Silk.  Flame Silks are a rare type of dragon with a genetic mutation that is passed down from generation to generation. As she begins to metamorphosis, her wrists are glowing a lava red color and she’s crying in pain as she begins to transform.

Luna is now in a cocoon, awaiting her transformation that takes place over the course of 7 days.   The cocoon is taken by the HiveWing guards, making Blue scream in fear!

Blue is now a threat to the Queen and must get out of the Hive!  He’s different and they know now.    On the run, Blue meets a HiveWing named Cricket.  She and Blue free Luna for the Hive on the 7th day of Metamorphosis.

They can’t go back to the Hive, they’re fugitives now.  One morning they were ambushed by seventeen dragons from the Hive!  They were found!  Blue, Cricket, IO and some of their companion LeafWings were captured.  Leaving the newly morphed Luna to be the hero in book 12!
